Clan Blair Society

Muniments Committee and Fund

'Muniments' refer generally to land documents that indicate ownership. In the late 1990s a member of Clan Blair Society was made aware of a chest of documents, or muniments from the Blair of Balthayock estate. A committee was formed to pursue the acquisition, translation, and publication of those documents. After a few years, the committee achieved success, publishing the Blair of Balthayock book. The book wasn't solely written from that chest of documents. It also contained the research of several CBS members on the family line.

But, what that project did was to pursue one of the Clan Blair Society's purposes and goals. Our Society's purpose is several, including educating people of our Scottish Heritage and Blair family history. The Muniments Committee and a fund we established as the Muniments Fund serves the purpose, when the potential arises, to learn of and preserve the history of the Blair family.

Blair House Auction

Recently, the Blair House, the ancient home of the Blair family, was sold. In addition, all items within the Blair House were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Included in those items being auctioned were several lots of historical documents pertaining to Blair.

The Muniments Committee reviewed the auction lots and attempted to procure one or two items that had potential value in an historical or genealogical perspective. Unfortunately, the pockets of other bidders were deep and we were unable to acquire any of the items. A few members were able to acquire certain items from Blair House (antiques), and our Scottish connection member was able to take digital photographs of some of the historical documents. The antiques were profiled in our May newsletter thanks to our lucky members. The photographs will be made available on the Members Only site in the near future for our members to review.

Even though we were unable to acquire any of the historical items due to a lack of funds, we will continue to accept donations to the Muniments Fund for future use in acquiring and publishing historical Blair materials.

If you would like to make a donation to the Muniments Fund, please either send a check to the Treasurer Ann Fredline (written to Clan Blair Society) or make a donation through our PayPal processing.
